Einige Jahre sind seit der der chaotischen, multikulturellen Vermählung von Toula und Ian Miller vergangen, die beiden immer noch ein Paar. Paris, die Tochter von Toula und Ian, ist inzwischen 17 Jahre alt.

But Toula is looking for more in life. Her mother convinces Gus to let her take some computer classes at college making him think it's his idea.

With those classes under her belt, she then takes over her aunt's travel agency again making her father think it's his idea. She meets Ian Miller, a high school English teacher, WASP, and dreamboat she had made a fool of herself over at the restaurant; they date secretly for a while before her family finds out.

Her father is livid over her dating a non-Greek. He has to learn to accept Ian; Ian has to learn to accept Toula's huge family, and Toula has to learn to accept herself.

This film is a celebration of life steeped in tradition, family, love and just the joy of living; and it invites you to come in and participate in that celebration, rather than leaving you on the outside looking in, as it were, merely as an observer.

For her to even think of doing otherwise would be unfathomable, unthinkable, unimaginable and, well And for Toula, it just may be the hardest thing she's ever had to do in her life.

Falling into step with his star, Zwick crafts and delivers a film that is totally immersed in the zest and zeal of living. Under his astute tutelage, the viewer becomes a part of Toula's life, sharing that grand heritage of which Gus is so proud.

He brings the story and the characters to life with detail and nuance, and in such a way that your senses will kick into full throttle.

The images he creates are so vivid, and it's such an engaging presentation, that the vitality he generates is almost tangible, and you can smell the lamb and all of those Greek delicacies cooking in the kitchen.

And Zwick sets it all in motion by establishing a pace that will sweep you along with the story; a carousel ride that will keep you involved and smiling all the way to the end.

There is an introspection to her portrayal that contrasts effectively with her vigorously outgoing environment, and it makes her presence all the more dominating and singular.

And it's actually in the reserve Vardalos exhibits in her character that the viewer finds the way inside to Toula's deepest longings and emotions.

Without question, this is a complex individual, in whom we find not only the strength necessary to maintain autonomy which she manages to do within the greater structure of her family , but vulnerability born of the respect she demonstrates toward her father, her family and the traditions they so lovingly serve.

It is this very complexity, in fact, that elicits the necessary empathy of the audience, enabling that vital connection between the viewer and Toula.

Moreover, one would be hard put to discern any distinction whatsoever between the actor and her character, as her performance is entirely natural and genuine.

As Toula's mother, Maria, Lainie Kazan is a delight. The character she creates is totally credible, and she's just a joy to watch. And the same can be said of Andrea Martin's performance as Aunt Voula.

This is a VERY Greek woman who is boisterous, overtly self-assured, opinionated and dominant; and she will win you over in an instant.

It is Maria and Voula that add some real spice to the film, and when you add in Gia Carides who plays Nikki to the mix, you've got a Greek feast fit for the gods.

It's the magic of the movies. Looking for something to watch? Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show.

Official Sites. For those of us who loved the original, seeing this movie is a lot like visiting an old friend — and it's a visit filled with the perfect combination of fond memories and new experiences that are both fun and sweet.

First up is our host, actress and comedienne Nia Vardalos. She wrote the screenplay for the original, which became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time!

Naturally, Hollywood types and ordinary fans alike have been asking her about a sequel ever since, but she cared enough about quality and her own integrity that she says she didn't write the sequel until she had a story that she felt was good enough, and she was ready to write it well enough to be worthy of the original.

And when Vardalos wrote her new story, she brought back all the main characters from the first film — and many of the minor ones — and all played by the original actors!

Our calendars tell us that the sequel came 14 years after the original, but that's 18 years to a Greek or, at least, to these Greeks.

Paris is a year-old high school senior who, like her mother before her, works part-time at the family-owned Greek restaurant, feels smothered by her loud, proud, loving but meddling Greek family, and wants that proverbial "something more" out of her life.

Paris' plan is to go to college — as far away from her Chicago home as the continental U. Toula is struggling to deal with her only child leaving — and with keeping the passion in her and Ian's busy lives.

And then there's the rest of the family. Just to cite a few examples: Ian's best friend, Mike Vardalos' real-life husband Ian Gomez , has gotten married and become a police officer.

Toula's cousin, Angelo Joey Fatone is the last unmarried member of his generation in the family and he's catching some flak for it.

Toula's Grandma Yiayia Bess Meisler — who is believed to be in her 90s , who is, of course, also Paris' great-grandmother, is not only alive and kicking, but even funnier and more developed as a character than in the first film.

I won't spoil the movie's big surprises by telling you about the changes in all of the characters' lives, but I will say that almost all of their stories are updated — and in ways that are alternately fun, surprising and always logical and right for the individual characters.

There are also a few new characters, played by familiar faces such as Rob Riggle, John Stamos and Rita Wilson the producer who brought the idea of the original film to the production company of her husband, Tom Hanks.

But what about the "big fat Greek wedding" 2 from the movie's title? Well, the "my" no longer refers to Toula, but to her mother!

Gus discovers that his and Maria's wedding license was not signed by a licensed priest, meaning that they were never legally married. Maria sees this news as an opportunity to make Gus woo her more romantically than he did the first time and show her how much he really cares.

This sets the stage for a grand finale which brings together all the film's story lines in ways that are more fun and heartfelt and less predictable than some critics say.

The script, directing and strong ensemble acting all remain true to the original characters. Great running gags from the first film continue although some are overplayed , but also work well standing alone, while many of the new jokes and sight gags are laugh-out-loud funny.

Although there's a minor Gus-centered sub-plot that I could've done without, the multiple story lines are fresh and woven together wonderfully.

This film isn't perfect, but it's nearly as hilarious and has even more heart than its much-beloved inspiration.

View All Critic Reviews Aug 25, This was a pleasant enough film with a few mild chuckles, but if the Greeks invented comedy, there's little evidence here.

There seems to be a reason the Greek masters didn't write sequels frequently. Christian C Super Reviewer. Jun 19, It's fun to revisit these characters, but it attempts to cram too much into too little space.

Some of the plot lines needed room to breathe. Not as good as the first, but if you did like the first one it is worth seeing.

Anthony V Super Reviewer. Jun 18, See more reviews like this at chrisbreviews. The first movie was a standalone classic, but of course the movie industry had to give the movie another go.

They struggled to find another wedding to put on to the extent that they gave an existing married couple another wedding.

I'm not saying this movie is bad, but it's just unnecessary. One thing I can say about this romantic comedy is that it had a lot of beautiful moments.

Moments where you cry, laugh, or just reminisce at. This wasn't an Oscar winning film or an action blockbuster, but it was a beautiful story about family and its importance.

The cast isn't very well known because there was one main criteria to be in this movie; to be Greek. And there aren't a lot of well-known Greek actors, but here they are none the less.

There are a lot of different sub plots and character arcs in this film for lots of different characters, but on the whole they were balanced fairly well.

I've always particularly enjoyed Lainie Kazan and Michael Constantine's performances as Maria and Gus Portokalos, the classic old married couple with no shortage of comedic moments.

No Oscars here, but the primary purpose was to entertain, so that's ok I guess. This film is mainly comedy and family, and it certainly entertained me.

I really enjoyed this film's comedic value. The setting is also hilarious, this massive Greek family in a proud American suburb, and this is explored more so than in the first film.

The themes were many and meaningful, including acceptance, family, adolescence, independence, happiness, love, tradition, and respect.

This film has something for everyone. The script wasn't amazing but had, as I've said, a lot of funny moments. Even if you're not a rom com fan, I'm sure you will enjoy something in this movie.

The potential for sequels was left open-ended, with a family member coming out as gay and Paris developing a love interest for a Greek boy from her school, any of these could be the subject for another big fat Greek wedding.

Actress Nia Vardalos has come up with an idea and discussions are in the works. I'm going to sound extremely hypocritical here but I'm interested to see how Paris's story ends The tone in this movie was very lighthearted, but serious where it needed to be.

I liked that. No cliches here either. The running time was perfect for this film. The previous instalment, the original, was better in every way in my opinion, but this did just fine as far as sequels go.

And no, you don't need to have seen the original to understand this one, you pick up the context pretty quickly.

To improve, the storyline could've been better, and less exactly-like-the-original. ALOT is identical in this one, from the formatting to lines to the general plot.

Director Jones let nostalgia consume this film a little more than it should have. Some of the sub plots were unnecessary grandfather in bathtub while others should've received more attention family member coming out!

This is a very easy trap to fall into. Overall, I enjoyed this movie a lot. It had some beautifully emotional moments and fantastic themes at its core with some great nostalgic moments from the first film.

But this doesn't escape the fact that this film shouldn't exist and therefore I shouldn't be writing this review.

Christopher B Super Reviewer. Jun 12, The original will always be the best but the sequel is funny sweet and moving and maybe it is more like a sitcom than the first but I laughed and enjoyed it.

I just hope creator Vardalos doesn't try a third helping and ruin the film's legacy. Christopher O Super Reviewer.

Not only has their relationship lost some of its spark, but they're also dealing with a rebellious teenage daughter who clashes with Greek traditions.

On top of that, Toula must contend with aging parents and the endless needs of cousins and friends. When a shocking family secret comes to light, the entire Portokalos clan makes plans to come together for an even bigger wedding than before.
