Over 10 episodes, it's stylish, moving, and sinister, riddled with ghosts both literal and metaphorical. Its real potential lies in breaking the mold more than reapplying it.
It's the people who haunt viewers more than the ghosts, and emphasizing the stories of the living is what makes Netflix's horror show come alive.
This Haunting is so far from the original source material that it's more of a demolition than adaptation. The Haunting of Hill House contains some of the most unforgettable horror imagery in film or television in years.
A cinematic masterpiece of the small screen. One of the best Netflix original shows out there, and my favorite horror experience in recent years. It's atmospheric, with a nearly consistent undertone of dread, peppered with just the right amount of jump scares to spice things.
Yet, at its heart, The Haunting of Hill House is much more than a ghost story. Another achievement of Flanagan's vision is that the series never really feels overbearing or long - each episode is crafted to keep the audience engaged and on their toes with existential dream looming around every corner.
The Haunting of Hill House brilliantly showcased relatable characters trying their best to conquer demonstrable villainy inside the house and inside themselves.
The series does struggle with pacing But with strong performances, intelligent and empathetic writing, and patient, well-crafted filmmaking, it soon becomes a powerful investigation into the lasting effects of trauma.

Shortly before Nell first encounters the bent-neck lady, a ghostly face watches her from the window. As Steve and his dad flee the house, a pair of clearly visible figures watch them from beside the stairs.
While Olivia stands in the kitchen doorway, a ghostly figure peeks at her from behind a large cupboard. It looks like a lovely day from the view of the garden behind Shirley, but only until you notice the tiny figure staring at her from the bushes and ruining everything.
Ghosts love to hang out under that chandelier in the dining room. One watches Olivia and Shirley as they discuss the house.
Look on the right to spot a face peeking through a glass panel in the door to watch Theo. When Theo and Luke are playing with the dumbwaiter, a blonde-haired ghosts listens from the room next door.
On the left side, behind the glass door, you can see the arm of a tall woman. Much clearer is this miserable guy, visible between the steps when Theo opens the trap door to the basement.
As Hugh, Nell and Luke run down the hall there is a figure clearly watching them on the left-hand side, behind the red lamp. That blonde ghost absolutely loves a chandelier.
Here she is hanging out under another one, perving on an intimate moment between Hugh and Olivia. Cast your eyes over to the glass-windowed cupboard on the left, then down a little.
Spot the small figure with its hand on the window pane? If you spotted this one yourself it probably scared the life out of you.
Under the piano you can see the hands of something that looks ready to pounce. When Hugh makes an angry attempt to try to get into the red room, something is unhappily watching him from the room next door.
As the Crains gather to say their final goodbyes, a flashback reveals Mr. Dudley's connection to the house -- and exposes a secret in the walls.

It depicts the different mental health issues tied to the characters from their childhood traumas as they grow older in a very sad and emotional way, and keeps us, the audience, captivated to see what will happen to this poor family, and why they are so emotionally scarred from that house.
Kiersten H. It was mildly entertaining. Like any other good horror it was a metaphor for mental illness, and only relied a little on the startle effect and gore.
But after a while it was: just. Even minor characters got to tell some boring ass story for a few minutes. Play a drinking game and every time a character looks off into the distance and starts to monologue, take a drink.
No human could make it through the entire series like this without dying from alcohol poisoning. Adam R. One of the best horrors I've ever seen.
Right up there alongside works from the masters of horror such as Stephen King, although this show differs in that it actually sticks the landing, giving an emotional, epic conclusion that rounds the show out perfectly.
Every single cast member put on the performance of a lifetime, with special appreciation going to Nel, the Mother and the crazy redhead lady.
And lets not forget about the scares, be it the incredible jumpscares to the insanely tense atmosphere it creats throughout to the subtle old school background horror tricks this show uses so well, all of it made my skin crawl in the best possible way.
A special nod to the episode of the storm and the funeral home, the camera work and directing was nothing short of masterful. One of the best things I've watched in years.
Joe G. Mesmerizing, beautifully filmed, beautifully acted. Shirley Jackson would be so proud! Will stay with me forever. Jovy J. Both amazing and terrifying no words can describe this, most horror tv shows are either super good and not that scary or super scary but not too good but this did both!
This is an absolute must see on netflix! Vinny M. Loved the format and structure of the story. Lends itself so well to a mini-series, giving so much more character development and back story than a movie would allow.
It does well to keep you engaged enough at each step. More a thriller than a chiller, but there were a couple of moments I jumped!
David C. Oct 28, I don't watch many TV shows, not many horror movies, and not many family dramas. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who can stomach the scary things.
This drama goes so far beyond what I expected to see from a 10 episode TV series, and it captivates with every visual scare, every bloodcurdling scream, and every spirit just out of view.
That said, I wasn't kept enraptured by the ghosts alone. The family dynamic is what kept me interested as the series went on, and learning more about each character made seeing them put at their wits' end that much more gripping.
At its core, Hill House is a story about a broken family seeking healing, and the ghost story as the pulse of the conflict drives them through this resolution.
I couldn't be happier with how fulfulling the story is from beginning to end, and I would encourage anyone to swallow their fears and watch this show.
You won't regret it Garrett J. In the present, Luke is now 90 days clean and determined to stay that way. Luke and Nell have shared a "twin thing" since birth, and each is able to feel the other's physical ailments.
Luke's best friend in the halfway house, Joey, runs away to get high, and Luke follows after. Child Luke wakes up one night and encounters the spirit of a tall man that comes to collect its bowler hat from Luke.
Luke finds his friend, but during his search, Luke feels unnaturally cold and stiff. Joey takes the money and disappears and later Luke is mugged, leaving him shoeless and wandering with the hatted man following him.
The feeling of cold from earlier is unbearable and Luke calls the halfway house to beg to be allowed back in. Luke shakily states it wasn't suicide.
Meredith Averill. Child Nell is tormented by an apparition she calls the Bent-Neck Lady, a ghostly figure with a broken neck standing at the foot of her bed while Nell is unable to move.
Adult Nell sees a sleep technologist, Arthur, for sleep paralysis. The two immediately hit it off and eventually marry.
During one sleep paralysis episode, Arthur suffers a sudden brain aneurysm and dies, while Nell sees the Bent-Neck Lady again.
Nell begins to use her medication less and less, causing schisms with Theo and Steve. In her broken state, and convinced by her therapist that Hill House is "just a carcass in the woods", Nell drives off to the house.
She enters the house and encounters an idyllic scenario of her family and Arthur in a beautifully renovated mansion before finding herself at the top of a staircase, where she puts a noose around her neck whilst imagining it to be her mother's locket, before she is pushed from the ledge by her mother, breaking her neck.
As Nell dies, she sees herself fall and travel through the past revealing that she herself is the Bent-Neck Lady haunting her younger self, becoming a ghost of the house.
The episode alternates between two storms: one the family experienced in the past, at Hill House, the other in the present, the night before Nell's funeral, with the entire Crain family meeting at the funeral parlor to view Nell's body, together in the same room for the first time since leaving the house.
During the storm in the past, Nell goes missing. While searching for her, Olivia sees spirits in the house, and enters a fugue state, acting strangely and unlike herself.
The children see a creature in the house. Nell is eventually found, and she says she had been there the whole time, but they couldn't see her. At the funeral home in the present, the Crains share memories of Nell.
Odd things happen: Steve sees a flash of the ghost of his mother, the power goes out, something is interfering with Nell's body, and Hugh sometimes seems to talk to himself.
The family demands answers from Hugh about what happened, leading to several confrontations and revelations. Tempers rise and the arguments turn nasty.
This escalates until Nell's coffin falls over by itself, interrupting the fights. Nell's spirit had been in the room the whole time as they fought, although no one could see her.
Charise Castro Smith. Hugh is getting dressed and preparing for the funeral, revealing that he has been talking to Olivia.
Hugh attempts to reach out to Shirley, who is uncooperative, but has better luck with Theo, and the two converse over each other's mistakes and make amends.
During the funeral, Hugh tries to reconnect with his children. In the past, Hugh assesses the house for storm damage; moisture and mold suggest a leak, but he can't find a source.
Dudley assists Hugh, revealing some history of the house's previous occupants. Dudley suggests the increasingly-erratic Olivia needs to spend time away from the house, sharing some of the strange experiences he and Mrs.
Dudley have had, and why they never come to the house at night. Hugh and Olivia agree she needs to spend some time away when her behavior becomes disturbing and dangerous.
Hugh discovers the source of the moisture and solves the disappearance of William Hill, the original owner. The ghost of Olivia appears twice, attacking Luke at the funeral and then Hugh and Theo in Shirley's office.
She also put buttons over the eyes of Nell's corpse. Luke goes missing after the funeral. Steven and Hugh drive around to find Luke.
Steven believes the family's issues are mental and explains he underwent a vasectomy to avoid spreading his family's "sickness".
Shirley and Theo stay at the funeral parlor to keep watch on whether Luke will use the stolen credit card.
They have an argument and are spooked by unexplained knocks across the walls. Shirley gets a notification of Luke using the credit card for gas, at a gas station on the way to Hill House.
Hugh reveals to Steven that while he was living in the house, Steven had been seeing ghosts all along; he just didn't realize they were ghosts.
He also explains that Steven and his siblings are like "an unfinished meal" to Hill House. Shirley and Theo decide to drive up to Hill House, while continuing to argue with each other.
Luke arrives at Hill House and tries to burn it down, only to be caught off guard by a vision of Olivia and another ghost, who incapacitates Luke.
In a flashback, Hugh finds Olivia, Nell, and Luke asleep on a couch, and she tells him she wished the children could stay like that forever.
When she walks through her reading room door she enters the morgue containing the corpses of adult Nell and Luke, where Nell speaks to her.
She wakes up in the middle of the night and encounters the ghost of Poppy Hill. Olivia agrees to leave Hill House the next morning to get some rest at the home of her sister, Janet, but actually checks into a nearby motel.
She returns to Hill House and the family's last night at the mansion starts to unfold as an unstable Olivia rouses the twins and Abigail, who was staying over for the night, for a tea party in the Red Room.
Shirley noticed her mother behaving oddly in the kitchen and awakes Hugh. He realizes Olivia had tainted tea with rat poison and is able to intervene before Luke and Nell drank the tea, but arrived too late to save Abigail.
Hugh gets the kids out of the house, leaving a horrified Olivia behind, who dies when she falls off the top of the spiral staircase.
Steven becomes locked in the room and awakens from a nightmare to find Luke near death as Theo and Shirley, unconscious nearby, awaken after experiencing revelatory dreams about their lives.
In Luke's dream he arises inside a pristine room and finds Olivia, Abigail, and a young Nell.
